What does a dyslexia assessment provide?
A clearer understanding of strengths and areas of difficulty.
A diagnosis of dyslexia, where the assessment findings indicate this is appropriate.
A comprehensive written report explaining the assessment findings.
Personalised recommendations for support at school, college, university, work or home.
Guidance on appropriate teaching strategies and interventions.
Recommendations for reasonable adjustments and support, where appropriate.
Evidence that may support applications for access arrangements, subject to the relevant regulations and requirements.
Greater self-understanding and confidence, helping individuals make sense of the difficulties they may have experienced.
For many individuals and families, an assessment can provide reassurance and answers to questions about why certain aspects of learning may have been difficult. Most importantly, it can help identify practical next steps and provide recommendations to support future learning and progress.
What does the assessment process look like?
Stage 1 - Initial inquiry
The process begins with an initial enquiry from a parent or education professional. Please complete the ‘Get in Touch’ form and I will aim to respond within 24 hours. There will be a short email/phone conversation to gain further information about whether an assessment is the best way forward for your child or young person.
Stage 2 - Background Information
Before an assessment takes place, parents, schools, and where appropriate the young person are asked to complete background information forms. This is an important step in the assessment process as it provides important information about your child’s developmental history, current and previous educational experience and strengths and difficulties.
If you would prefer to complete this stage via a phone conversation this can be arranged.
Stage 3 - Assessment Session
Payment must be made before the assessment session takes place.
The assessment session takes approximately 3 hours including short breaks. During the assessment your child will complete a range of activities that aim to understand their:
Literacy skills (reading, writing, spelling).
Phonological, memory, and processing skills.
Language and reasoning skills.
The assessment process aims to be calm and relaxed so that the young person feels comfortable and is able to provide a true reflection of their skills.
Stage 4 - Reporting
Following the assessment the results, observations, and background information are carefully analysed in order to provide a clear picture of the young person’s learning profile.
You will receive a clear, detailed report in line with SASC guidance, which will identify whether a profile consistent with dyslexia is present. The report will contain tailored recommendations for support and adjustments and guidance on next steps for home, school and future education and employment.
Stage 5 - Feedback
Following the report you will be offered a feedback session approximately 1 - 2 weeks after receiving the report. This will give you the opportunity to discuss the results of the report. Feedback can also be provided to the educational establishment where needed.
